Genres of Heavy Metal

The world of heavy metal is constantly changing, with new bands and genres emerging all the time. It can be hard to keep up with all the latest trends, but that’s where we come in. In this article, we’ll be taking a look at some of the different genres of heavy metal and what you can expect to see in the next few years.

Death Metal

Death metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. It typically employs heavily distorted and low-tuned guitars, played with techniques such as palm muting and tremolo picking, deep growling vocals, aggressive, powerful drumming featuring double kick and blast beat percussion, minor keys or atonality, abrupt tempo, key, and time signature changes, and chromatic chord progressions. The lyrical themes of death metal may invoke slasher film-stylized violence, political conflict, religion, nature, philosophy, science fiction, and sexuality.

Death metal emerged in the mid-1980s when Thrash Metal became too fast and technical for many of its original practitioners. Many bands in the genre are strongly influenced by earlier Death/Doom bands such as Witchfinder General (UK), Hellhammer (Switzerland) and Celtic Frost (Switzerland).

Doom Metal

Doom metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that typically employs slow tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much “thicker” or “heavier” sound than other heavy metal genres. Both the music and the lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom. The genre is strongly influenced by the early work of Black Sabbath, particularly songs such as “Black Sabbath”, “Paranoid”, and “Iron Man”, which are credited with having established the heavy metal sound.

Early European pioneer bands of doom metal include Witchfinder General, Candlemass, Trouble and Saint Vitus. American pioneers include Pentagram, Pagan Altar, Saint Vitus Bar and Cirith Ungol. British bands My Dying Bride, Anathema and Paradise Lost introduced an atmosphere of melancholy into their music which would be later taken up by groups like Katatonia, Anathema and My Dying Bride. All these bands were influenced by Black Sabbath’s work in particular.

In the mid-1990s Doom Metal became more experimental with drone doom (Sunn O)))), sludge doom (Eyehategod), death-doom (Evoken), blackened doom metal (Esoteric) and Funeral Doom (Mournful Congregation). In the late 1990s and early 2000s a new wave of traditional doom metal bands emerged including Electric Wizard, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Cathedral, Witchcraft and Orchid.

Thrash Metal

Thrash metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music characterized by its fast tempo and overall aggression. Songs often use fast percussive beats, low-register guitar riffs, and high-register guitar solos. fast tempos, low-register guitar riffs, high-register guitar solos and heavy bass lines used in a variety of ways. Thrash metal songs typically use fast, percussive and low-register guitar riffs, overlaid with shredding-style lead work. The drumming is usually oriented to playingfast beats with a lot of double bass usage. Fast tempos require fast fingers on the fretboard to perform the basic riffing duties as well as the advanced soloing that is prevalent in the genre; highly skilled thrash metal drummers can play at blisteringly fast speeds in more complex arrangements without sacrificing any clarity or precision.

The genre evolved in the early 1980s from combining earlier forms of aggressive music like hardcore punk with the newly developed speed and heaviness of then-newly invented British heavy metal bands like Venom and Motörhead. It enjoyed popularity throughout much of the 1980s and early 1990s before waning in popularity since the mid-1990s; however, many thrash metal bands experienced a resurgence in popularity starting in the 2000s (decade).
