The 51st Annual Country Music Association (CMA) Awards are trending now. The show, which aired live on ABC on November 8, featured performances by some of the biggest names in country music, including Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Florida Georgia Line, Garth Brooks, and more. In addition to the performances, the show also featured several special presentations, including a tribute to the late country music legend Merle Haggard.

The show was hosted by Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley.

Miranda Lambert, who won Female Vocalist of the Year

The 51st Annual Country Music Association Awards were held on November 8, 2017, at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. The event was hosted by Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley for the 10th time.

Entertainer of the Year was won by Garth Brooks for the seventh time (making him the only artist to have won this award more than four times), while Chris Stapleton won Male Vocalist of the Year and 17-year-old newcomer Maren Morris was named Female Vocalist of the Year.

Best New Artist went to Jon Pardi and Brothers Osborne won Duo of the Year. In a highly competitive year for Single, Record and Song of the Year, all three awards went to Lauryn Hill for “Better Man” (Record), Thomas Rhett for “Craving You” (Single) and Little Big Town for “Better Man” (Song).

This is Lambert’s eighth win in this category.

Carrie Underwood’s opening monologue

Carrie Underwood took the stage at the 51st annual Country Music Association Awards on Wednesday night to open the show with a special monologue.

The seven-time CMA winner began her opening by joking about how she was “glad” to be back at the CMAs after last year’s show, which she did not attend.

“It is good to be back. I’m glad thisearing, even if it is a little different,” Underwood said, before adding that she was excited to see all of the nominees and presenters virtually.

Underwood went on to thank those working on the show behind the scenes, including the cameramen, producers and hair and makeup artists.

“I’m so grateful for everyone working tirelessly behind the scenes to make this happen,” she said. “I know it’s not easy.”

The 36-year-old singer then went on to address the current state of the world, saying that while it has been “a tough year for everyone,” she remains optimistic for the future.

“We have faced so many challenges this year, but through it all, I’ve seen kindness and hope prevail,” Underwood said. “It gives me faith for tomorrow.”

Underwood closed her monologue by paying tribute to those who have lost their lives due to COVID-19, as well as first responders and essential workers.

“So tonight, let’s celebrate their lives, let’s celebrate what makes us country,” she said. “And most of all, let’s celebrate life.”

Keith Urban’s emotional speech

During the 51st annual Country Music Association Awards, Keith Urban gave an emotional speech dedicated to his late father, Robert “Bob” Urban.

“He was always such a big music fan,” Keith said of his dad. “I remember growing up, he would sit in his easy chair and just listen to records for hours and hours.”

Keith went on to say that his father instilled a love of music in him, and that he hopes to do the same for his own children.

“I just wanted to say thanks, Dad,” Keith concluded. “I know you’re up there listening tonight, and I hope I make you proud.”

The Internet was quick to praise Keith for his touching tribute, with many calling it the highlight of the evening.

The In Memoriam segment

The In Memoriam segment is always a moving part of the show, and this year was no different. The segment featured tribute performances from country music stars such as Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, and Little Big Town, in honor of those we’ve lost in the past year. Notable figures such as Glen Campbell, Don Williams, Troy Gentry, and Bernie Leadon were honored during the segment.
