Introduction
Slippery Rock University’s Music Department will host its “Music Major for a Day” event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 28 in Swope Music Hall. The event is an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to experience a day in the life of a Slippery Rock music student.
Why a music major?
Music has always been an important part of my life. I grew up playing piano and singing in choir, and I’ve always loved going to concerts. When I was looking at colleges, I knew that I wanted to study music. Slippery Rock University has an excellent music program, and I’m so glad that I chose to study here.
There are so many reasons why studying music is a great choice. First of all, music is a proven stress reliever. Music majors have to juggle a lot of different tasks, and often have very demanding schedules. But the satisfaction of creating beautiful music makes it all worth it.
In addition to being a great way to relieve stress, studies have shown that music can also improve your memory and concentration. As a music major, you’ll be constantly challenged to learn new things and remember complex information. This can translate into success in other areas of your life as well.
Of course, one of the best parts about being a music major is getting to perform. Live concerts are always exciting, and as a musician, you’ll have the opportunity to share your passion with others. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of making beautiful music with your friends.
If you’re considering studying music in college, I highly encourage you to do it. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience, and you’ll never regret it.
What to expect
Slippery Rock University’s Music Major for a Day program is designed to give high school students a taste of what it’s like to be a college music major. The day-long event includes participation in ensembles, master classes and workshops, as well as a campus tour and lunch with current SRU music majors.
The benefits

The drawbacks
One potential drawback of being a music major is the number of hours required to complete the degree. Most music majors are required to take 36 credit hours of music courses, which is the equivalent of 12 full-time courses. This can be a lot to handle if you are also working or have other commitments.
The curriculum
The curriculum for Music Major for a Day consists of four required classes: Musicianship I, Applied Music, Class Piano, and Ensembles. In addition to these required courses, music majors must complete musician ship II and III, advanced applied music, and an additional eight credits of ensembles. The music department also recommends that students take four years of a foreign language.
The faculty
Slippery Rock University’s Music Department will host its third annual “Music Major for a Day” event March 10. The daylong event, which is free and open to the public, will give participants an opportunity to learn about the music program, experience a music major class and take part in a performance ensemble.
Dr. Jonathan Wheeler, director of choral activities and professor of music, said the department created the event to show potential students what a music major at SRU is all about.
“We want to provide an opportunity for high school students who are thinking about becoming music majors to come and spend a day on campus,” Wheeler said. “This is their chance to see what we do, meet our faculty and get a feel for what it’s like to be a student here.”
The students
Out of state high school students enrolled in the Slippery Rock University Music Major for a Day program had the opportunity to learn about what it’s like to be a music major at the University. The daylong event, held recently, included information sessions, question and answer sessions with music faculty, student panels and small group performances.
The facilities
The school offers a broad range of music education majors including music therapy, music industry, musical theatre, music education, and general music studies. The department has state-of-the-art facilities, which include a 400-seat recital hall, a dance studio, multiple computer labs, and a music library.
The location
Slippery Rock University is located just North of Pittsburgh, in the small town of Slippery Rock, PA. The Music Major for a Day program is held on the SRU campus.
