What software do I need?

If you are just getting started with producing electronic music, I would highly recommend checking out one of these two options.
If you are using a different DAW, or an older version of either of these two, you may still be able to use MPE by installing a third-party plugin such as the Waves Codex Wavetable Synthesizer ($199). Currently, there is no official support for MPE in any version of Pro Tools, although there are some workarounds that allow you to use it with third-party plugins.
In addition to a DAW, you will also need a compatible MIDI controller. There are a few different manufacturers making controllers that support MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression), but the most popular one right now is the Roli Seaboard Rise 49 ($899). This is an expensive piece of gear, but it is by far the best option on the market right now for anyone looking to get into using MPE.
If you want to buy a less expensive controller, the Akai MPK249 ($349) is a good option. It doesn’t have as many features as the Seaboard Rise 49, but it is still a very capable controller and it’s much more affordable.
Alternatively, if you already have a MIDI controller that you like and don’t want to invest in a new one, there are a few companies making plugins that emulate the Seaboard’s unique surface (the Roli Equator $149 and Bitwig372 $37 being the two most popular). These can be used with any MIDI controller and allow you to experience some of the benefits of MPE without spending a lot of money on new hardware.
What hardware do I need?

If you’re using another DAW, you’ll need to install a plugin that adds MPE support; the most popular one is the Max for Live devices made by Isotonik Studios.
