Who is Jesus?
Jesus was a first-century Jewish teacher and preacher who was crucified by the Romans. He is the central figure of Christianity, and his life and teachings have had a profound impact on billions of people. Through his death and resurrection, he conquered death and offers eternal life to all who believe in him.
The Gospels
The Gospels are accounts of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. They are the first four books of the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Christians believe that these books were written by people who knew Jesus and that they offer an accurate record of his life.
The word “gospel” comes from the Old English word “godspel”, meaning “good news”. Christians believe that the good news is that Jesus came to save humanity from its sin. The gospel books tell us about Jesus’ birth, his life, his death and his Resurrection. They also contain some of his most famous teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount and the parables.
Christians believe that by reading and studying the Gospels we can get to know Jesus better and come to a deeper understanding of what he did for us.
The Old Testament
Jesus is the eternal Son of God. He is fully God and fully man. He is the only Savior for mankind, and His death on the cross is the only sacrifice that can atone for our sins.
Jesus was foretold in the Old Testament. Genesis 3:15 says that Jesus would come as a “seed of woman” to crush the head of Satan. This “seed of woman” was clearly a reference to Jesus, who was born of a Virgin (Isaiah 7:14).
The Old Testament is full of references to Jesus. In Psalm 22, David prophesied that Jesus would be crucified (Psalm 22:16). In Isaiah 53, Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would be despised and rejected (Isaiah 53:3), that He would be a sacrificial lamb (Isaiah 53:7), and that His sacrifice would result in salvation for all who believe in Him (Isaiah 53:5).
What did Jesus do?
The miracles
The Bible records 35 miracles of Jesus, including his birth, the feeding of the 5,000, walking on water and raising Lazarus from the dead.
Some people argue that Jesus never actually performed any miracles and that the accounts in the Bible are mythical stories developed by early Christians. However, even if we take a skeptical view of the Bible, there are non-religious historians who attest to at least some of Jesus’ miracles.
For example, Flavius Josephus was a first-century Jewish historian who wrote about Judea and the Jews. In his book “Antiquities of the Jews,” he describes an incident in which Jesus healed a man’s withered hand on the Sabbath (a day of rest for Jews). While critics say Josephus’ account may have been embellished, there is no reason to believe he would have invented an event that goes against Jewish law.
Similarly, in his book “Histories,” the Roman historian Tacitus describes how Nero blamed Christians for a fire that burned much of Rome. Tacitus writes that Nero scapegoated Christians because they were “hated for their abominations.” He goes on to describe how Christians were subjected to horrible punishments, including being burned alive and fed to wild animals in the arenas. Tacitus was not a Christian himself, so it’s unlikely he would have made up this story.
Whether or not you believe the Bible is true, there is evidence that Jesus was a real person who did amazing things.
The teachings
When it comes to the teachings of Jesus, it’s important to remember that He didn’t come to start a new religion. In fact, He spent most of His time trying to reform the religious beliefs of His day. Many of His teachings were simple clarified versions of what God had already said in the Old Testament. For example, when asked about the greatest commandment, Jesus said:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40)
This isn’t a new teaching; it’s just a really clear explanation of what God had said before:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” (Deuteronomy 6:5)
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Leviticus 19:18)
Of course, Jesus didn’t just teach about love; He also talked about other important topics like forgiveness, faith, salvation, and eternity. But at the heart of His message was always love. Because Jesus Himself is Love personified, and His greatest desire is for us to experience that love firsthand.
Why did Jesus die?
The Bible tells us that Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins. He sacrificed His life so that we could have eternal life. His death was an act of love. He loves us so much that He was willing to die for us.
For our sins
The death of Jesus Christ was no ordinary death. He didn’t die because He was weak or because He couldn’t handle the pain. He didn’t die because the Jews asked for His crucifixion. And He didn’t die because Pilate washed his hands of Him. No, Jesus died for a much greater purpose—He died for our sins.
In Romans 5:8, the Apostle Paul wrote, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” It was while we were sinners—enemy of God, running from Him, and deserving His wrath—that Jesus died for us. It is only through His death that we can have forgiveness and eternal life in heaven.
The death of Jesus was no mistake; it was planned by God from before the foundation of the world (1 Peter 1:20). And because it was planned by God, we know that it had to be a perfect and sinless sacrifice—which is why Jesus is the only One who could die for our sins. So next time you see a cross or hear about the death of Jesus, remember that He did it all for love—He loved you so much that He gave His life to save you from yours.
For our salvation
The death of Jesus is the centerpiece of the Christian faith, and for good reason. Jesus himself said that he came into the world to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). So why did Jesus die?
The Bible tells us that Jesus died to save us from our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3). When we put our faith in him, we are forgiven and given eternal life (John 3:16).
But that’s not the only reason Jesus died. He also died to break the power of sin and death over us. Because he rose from the dead, we know that death is not the end. We have hope for eternal life with God (1 Corinthians 15:20-21).
So when we think about why Jesus died, we can see that it was for our salvation and for our hope. He died to give us new life in him.
What does it mean to follow Jesus?
While the answer to this question may seem obvious to some, others may struggle with what it really looks like to follow Jesus. Does it mean going to church every Sunday and Wednesday? Does it mean giving up your favorite sin? Does it mean becoming a missionary? While all of those things can be a part of following Jesus, they are not the only things that define what it looks like to follow Him.
A personal relationship
When we talk about having a personal relationship with Jesus, what does that mean?
A personal relationship with Jesus means having a two-way conversation with Him. It’s more than just singing songs or saying prayers. It’s about getting to know Him and listening to what He has to say.
It’s also about taking action on what He asks us to do. When we follow Jesus, we try our best to obey His commands and live according to His teachings. This can be hard at times, but it’s worth it because we know that He loves us and wants what’s best for us.

A life of obedience
When we talk about “Following Jesus,” what does that mean?
The most important thing to understand is that, in the Bible, the term “obedience” is not a popular word. In fact, it’s often seen as a negative thing. But when we understand what it means to truly follow Jesus, we see that obedience is not a bad thing at all.
Obedience simply means to do what Jesus says. It’s that simple. And when we live our lives in obedience to Jesus, we will find true joy and fulfillment.
So then, what does it look like to live a life of obedience?
Well, the first step is obviously to know what Jesus has said. We can’t obey someone if we don’t know what they’ve asked us to do! So the first step is to read the Bible and learn about who Jesus is and what he has called us to do.
But reading the Bible is not enough. We also need to ask God to help us understand it and apply it to our lives. The Holy Spirit will help us do this if we ask him too.
Once we know what God has called us to do, the next step is actually doing it! This will look different for everyone, but some things we might be called to do include: sharing our faith with others, serving in our church or community, giving generously, or living a lifestyle of purity and holiness.
Whatever God has called us to do, we need to be obedient and do it! This is how we truly follow Jesus.
