The 2017 Valley Opera season will feature Verdi’s “La Traviata” and Bizet’s “Carmen.” We are excited to present these two well-known operas to our audiences.

The History of the Academy of Music Valley Opera

The Academy of Music Valley Opera is a small, independent opera company based in the San Fernando Valley, just outside of Los Angeles. The company was founded in 2006 by Artistic Director Peter Kazaras and Executive Director Laura Kay Stanzione. The mission of the company is to produce quality opera at an affordable price, and to make opera accessible to as many people as possible.

How did the Academy of Music Valley Opera come to be?

The Academy of Music Valley Opera (AMVO) was founded in 2006 by Dr. Carol Berry and her husband, Richard, with the goal of providing live opera performances to the community of Santa Clarita Valley and the surrounding areas. The AMVO is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is currently the only professional opera company in Los Angeles County north of Downtown LA.

Opera has been performed in Santa Clarita Valley since the early 1980s when a small group of enthusiasts formed the Santa Clarita Valley Opera Guild. The Guild produced several Gilbert & Sullivan operettas and one fully-staged production of Puccini’s La Bohème before disbanding in the late 1990s. Dr. Berry, an opera singer herself, had been involved with the Guild and was determined to keep opera alive in the valley.

With the help of generous donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations, the Berry’s were able to purchase a small theater in Newhall, which they renovated and renamed The Raymond Theater. The first season consisted of four mainstage operas and two children’s operas, all performed in English. The company has continued to grow since then, adding more performances and educational programs each year.

The company’s first season consisted of three mainstage productions and several educational outreach events. The company has since grown to include seven mainstage productions per season, as well as a variety of educational and outreach programs.
