Jake began playing the ukulele at age four, inspired by his mother’s collection of Hawaiian music. He soon developed a passion for the instrument, and by age eleven he was good enough to perform with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra.
Shimabukuro’s musical talent caught the attention of producer/songwriter Wayneco Wilson, who helped him get a recording contract with Epic Records Japan when he was eighteen years old. Shimabukuro’s self-titled debut album was released in 2001 and quickly became a best-seller in Japan. He has since released six more albums, including his most recent, “Grand Ukulele,” which topped Billboard’s World Music chart in 2012.
