What is electronic dance music?
Electronic dance music (EDM), also known as dance music, club music, or simply dance, is a broad range of percussive electronic music genres made largely for nightclubs, raves and festivals. EDM is generally produced for playback by DJs who create seamless selections of tracks, called a mix, by segueing from one recording to another.
It includes various subgenres like house, techno, trance, drum and bass etc. The popularity of EDM has grown tremendously in recent years. According to a report by International Music Summit China, the value of China’s EDM industry will grow from 6.5 billion RMB in 2016 to over 13 billion RMB by 2020.
History of electronic dance music
The history of electronic dance music is often traced back to the formation of a subculture in the 1970s. This subculture was centered around the use of electronic musical instruments and the desire to create new, innovative sounds. In the early 1980s, a new style of music called house emerged from this subculture. House music was characterized by a 4/4 beat and often featured samples of other songs or sounds. This new style of music quickly spread from its origins in Chicago to other major cities in the United States and Europe.
In the 1990s, a new generation of electronic dance music artists began to experiment with different styles and sounds. This led to the development of various subgenres, including trance, techno, and drum & bass. By the end of the decade, electronic dance music had become one of the most popular genres in the world. Today, it continues to evolve and innovate, with new subgenres emerging all the time.
