Nirvana achieved massive success with their 1991 album Nevermind, which topped record charts around the world and triggered an avalanche of sold-out tours. However, Cobain grew weary of the music industry and fame associated with Nevermind, causing him much personal turmoil. These tensions eventually came to a head with Nirvana’s 1993 album In Utero; though it was another critical and commercial success, Cobain felt it did not accurately represent Nirvana’s intent or live performances, leading him to ask that future releases be handled differently.

Nirvana’s brief run ended following the death of Kurt Cobain in 1994; despite releasing only three full-length studio albums in their seven years as a band, Nirvana has come to be regarded as one of the most influential and important alternative rock bands of all time. Rolling Stone named them the 75th greatest artist of all time and placed three of their albums—Nevermind (1991), In Utero (1993), and MTV Unplugged in New York (1994)—in its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Their popularity brought unprecedented attention to underground music at the time and marked them as symbols of Generation X culture; Nathan Brackett writes that “with Nevermind they inspired a mass commercial movement in alternative rock that crossed over into mainstream radio.” In 2002 Nevermind was voted number 30 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time”. NME considered Nevermind to be “the greatest album ever made” in a 2002 poll commemorating British music magazine NME’s 50th anniversary.

Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam was one of the grunge bands to come out of Seattle in the early 1990s. The band’s debut album, Ten, was released in 1991 and was a huge success, selling more than 13 million copies in the United States. Pearl Jam’s follow-up album, Vs., was released in 1993 and debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. The band’s next album, Vitalogy, was released in 1994 and was also a huge success, selling more than nine million copies in the United States.

The band’s popularity began to decline in the late 1990s, but they remain one of the most successful grunge bands of all time. Pearl Jam has sold more than 32 million records in the United States and more than 60 million records worldwide. The band has won five Grammy Awards and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Soundgarden

Soundgarden was one of the most successful grunge bands of the early 1990s. The band’s dark, heavy sound was a major influence on the grunge music scene. Soundgarden’s breakthrough album, “Badmotorfinger,” was released in 1991 and featured the hit single “Rusty Cage.” The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Soundgarden as one of the leading grunge bands. The band’s follow-up album, “Superunknown,” was even more successful, reaching #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling more than five million copies in the United States. “Superunknown” featured a number of hits, including “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman.” Soundgarden continued to enjoy success in the late 1990s with the release of their last album, “Down on the Upside.” The album was not as successful as their previous releases, but it still sold more than two million copies worldwide. Soundgarden disbanded in 1997, but they reunited in 2010 and have since released a new album, “King Animal.”

Grunge guitarists crank their amplifiers to high volume to create a “wall of sound.” This signature distortion sound was created by turning up the gain (or distortion) on their guitar amps to the point where the waveforms from the guitars became distorted, creating a harsh, fuzzy, and feedback-laden tonal quality. Due to the loud volume necessary to create this sound, grunge bands generally favored small, tube-driven combo amplifiers. Many Grunge guitarists would also thrash their guitars violently while playing, causing strings to break and adding to the distorted sound.
