Introduction

The term “electronic dance music” (EDM) has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. This relatively new genre of music encompasses a wide range of sub-genres, styles and tempos, making it difficult to define. In general, EDM can be described as a thumping, pulse-pounding style of music that is designed to get people moving and dancing.

EDM has its roots in the 1970s disco era, but it has since evolved and grown to become one of the most popular genres of music in the world. Today, EDM is routinely played at clubs, festivals and parties all over the globe. If you’re looking for a non-stop party mix that will keep you moving all night long, then look no further than this collection of the best EDM tunes of 2014!

What is EDM?

Electronic dance music, also known as EDM, is a broad range of percussive electronic music genres made largely for nightclubs, raves and festivals. It is generally produced for playback by DJs who create seamless selections of tracks, called a mix by segueing from one recording to another. EDM producers also perform their music live in a concert or festival setting in what is sometimes called a live PA. In Europe, EDM is more commonly called ‘dance music’, or simply ‘dance’.

Despite the emphasis on electronic instruments and technology, there are many different types of EDM genres, including but not limited to: house, techno, trance, drum and bass (also written as D&B, DnB or D’n’B), dubstep, hardstyle and trap.

The Future of EDM

The electronic dance music scene is constantly evolving, with new genres and sub-genres emerging all the time. In 2014, we saw the rise of deep house and future garage, while established genres like trance and hardcore continued to evolve. So what does the future hold for EDM?

We asked some of the scene’s leading DJs and producers to give us their predictions for the future of EDM. Here’s what they had to say:

“I think we’re going to see more and more collaboration between artists from different genres, as well as between artists from different disciplines (e.g. producers teaming up with visual artists or fashion designers). This will lead to some really interesting and innovative new music.” – DJ / producer John Digweed

“I think we’re going to see a lot more focus on the live experience, with more and more acts incorporating live instruments into their sets. We’ll also see a continued rise in popularity of ‘non-traditional’ venues such as warehouses, boats, and even forests!” – DJ / producer M4SONIC

“I think people are going to start getting really tired of hearing the same 4/4 beats all the time, and we’ll see a move towards more experimental rhythms and soundscapes.” – producer / DJ Nosaj Thing

“In terms of production values, I think we’re going to see a move away from polished, perfectionist sound towards something that is rougher around the edges and has more character.” – producer / DJ Daniel Avery
