From boundary-pushing sound design to genre-defying experimentation, there was no shortage of incredible music to be found. Here are some of the best tracks of the year, spanning a wide range of styles and genres.
The best electronic music of 2020 came in many forms—and from all corners of the globe. This list of the year’s best electronic albums represents a wide range of sounds and styles, from the atmospheric techno of Wales’ Welsh producers Huw Stephens and codec subsidiary Hidden Orchestra, to the more cerebral IDM of Icelandic producer Bjarki, to Brazilian producer Sote’s deconstructed club music. There was also plenty of excellent music from North America, including standout releases from Chicago experimental duo Bitter Alliance and Detroit techno stalwart Bob James. But no matter where they came from, all of these albums had one thing in common: they pushed electronic music forward in 2020.
Best Remixes
In a year that was tough for many people around the world, music was one of the things that kept us going. From club anthems to heart-wrenching ballads, 2020 was a great year for music across genres.
And while we could make a list of our favorite songs of the year, we wanted to focus on something a little different: the best remixes. A good remix can take an already great song and make it even better, whether it’s by adding a new energy or simply putting a new spin on things.
Below are our picks for the best remixes of 2020. We’ve included a wide range of genres and tempos, so there’s something for everyone. And if you’re looking for even more great music from this year, be sure to check out our other lists of the best songs, albums, and EPs of 2020.
“Roses” by Saint Jhn (Imanbek Remix)
This Remix by Imanbek took an already catchy pop song and turned it into an international club hit. The addition of a thumping bassline and some expert production turns “Roses” into a certified bop.
“Say So” by Doja Cat (Nicki Minaj Remix)
The original version of “Say So” was pretty great, but the addition of Nicki Minaj takes things to another level entirely. Her verse is playful and flirtatious, adding yet another layer to this already complex track.
“Rain On Me” by Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande (Corbin Remix)
Corbin’s remix of “Rain On Me” is slower and more atmospheric than the original, but it still packs a punch. The addition of some haunting vocals and synths gives the track an ethereal quality that we can’t get enough of.
“To Die For” by Sam Smith (Jacques Lu Cont Remix)
Jacques Lu Cont’s remix of “To Die For” is both beautiful and heartbreaking. The original track is already quite emotive, but Jacques Lu Cont’s rework adds an extra layer of pathos with its delicate piano melody and stripped-back production.
The best electronic music of 2020 came in many forms. From club tracks to more downtempo and contemplative material, the past year was full of great music. Here are our picks for the best electronic tracks of 2020.
-Club Music-
Club music experienced a resurgence in popularity in 2020, thanks in part to the rise of “micro-genres” like footwork, juke, and trap. For our pick for the best club track of 2020, we have to go with JPEGMAFIA’s “BODYGUARD.” Featuring blistering production from Kenny Beats, “BODYGUARD” is a perfect example of everything that was great about club music this year: it’s dark, energetic, and full of surprises.
-Downtempo & Contemplative-
While club tracks dominated the first half of the year, the latter half belonged to more downtempo and contemplative material. For our pick for the best track in this category, we have to go with Nils Frahm’s “For Max.” Taken from his album All Melody, “For Max” is a gorgeous piano piece that is equal parts meditative and uplifting.
The Best Electronic Music of 2020
remixes were aplenty this year, with some truly epic reworks coming from the likes of Jai Wolf, Seven Lions, Illenium, and more. Here are our favorite EDM remixes of 2020.
“Shelter” by Seven Lions & Joubi
Seven Lions’ beautiful track “Shelter” got an even more beautiful makeover by Canadian producer Joubi this year. The gorgeous melodies and uplifting vocals remain intact, but Joubi’s remix is hypnotic and ethereal, with a hint of darkness woven throughout. It’s a stunning remix that does justice to the original while still offering something new and exciting.
“Obsession” by Jai Wolf
Jai Wolf’s “Obsession” was one of the darkest and most emotional tracks of 2020, and his remix for Bali Baby’s “Haunt U” flips the script completely. The original track is dark and somber, but Jai Wolf’s remix is bright and cheerful, with bubbly synths and a fun, catchy beat. It’s a total 180 from the original, but it works so well.
“Good Things Fall Apart” by Illenium
Illenium took his already-amazing track “Good Things Fall Apart” and made it even better with his remix for Tritonal. The original track is melancholic and gorgeous, but Illenium’s remix adds a touch of hope with its bright melodies and anthemic drops. It’s the perfect pick-me-up for when you’re feeling down, and proof that Illenium is a master of his craft.
