Carola was born in Naples, Italy. When he was 13, he heard Afrika Bambaataa’s “Planet Rock” which inspired him to buy turntables and a mixer. He began DJing soon after. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Carola was a member of the Groups Phuture Wax and Zenit. In 1995, he founded his own record label Design Records. The following year he released his first album 21st Century Ballroom.

In 1997, Carola founded Plus 8 Records with Richie Hawtin. The label has released music by artists such as Dave Clarke, John Acquaviva, Jeff Mills, Speedy J and Joey Beltram.

In 1999, Carola released his second album The Guardiola Variations on Plus 8 Records. The album peaked at number 29 on the UK Dance Chart.

In 2013, Carola was nominated for a Grammy Award for his album Play it Loud.
