Genre
Bill & Ted Face the Music will not feature a heavy metal soundtrack, despite fears to the contrary.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bill & Ted screenwriter Ed Solomon confirmed that while the sequel will see the titular characters “trying to write the song that will save the world,” it will not be a metal song.
“People have wondered if it’s going to be a metal song,” Solomon said. “It is not a metal song.”
This will likely come as a relief to fans of the franchise, who were worried that the third film would see Bill & Ted adopting a heavier sound in order to stay relevant in the current musical landscape.
While the soundtrack for Bill & Ted Face the Music has yet to be revealed, we do know that it will feature an appearance from Weezer, who recorded a cover of “Billie Jean” for the film.
Why the Soundtrack Won’t Be Heavy Metal
In an interview with Kerrang!, Bill & Ted Face the Music director Dean Parisot revealed that the soundtrack for the upcoming sequel will not be heavy metal. He said, “It’s not going to be all shredding guitar solos. It’s going to be different.”
The Movie’s Tone
When it comes to the Bill & Ted Face the Music soundtrack, you can probably forget about any thrash metal anthems. Director Dean Parisot told us that they tried to stay true to the tone of the first two films, which were a little more lighthearted and had more of a pop-rock sound.
The Characters’ Ages
It’s been 29 years since we last saw Bill & Ted, so it would make sense that the soundtrack to Bill & Ted Face the Music would feature a lot of music from the ’90s. However, according to Keanu Reeves, that won’t be the case. In an interview with NME, Reeves said that the soundtrack will actually feature “a lot of new music.”
When asked if there would be any ’90s artists on the soundtrack, Reeves replied, “No, I think it’s all new music. I don’t think there’s any licensed music in it… It’s all original music for the movie.” He went on to say that the new songs will be performed by a “really cool” group of rappers and rockers.
So why no ’90s songs? Reeves explained that it would be difficult to find songs that fit the characters’ ages. “They’re middle-aged guys,” he said. “I just don’t think Frozen’s Let It Go is going to work.”
While we’re bummed that we won’t be hearing any ’90s classics in Bill & Ted Face the Music, we’re excited to see what the new soundtrack has in store.
