Who is eligible?

To be eligible, a single must have been commercially released within the eligibility period and received significant airplay or sales. The award is given to the artist(s), producer(s), recording engineer(s) and mixer(s) associated with the winning song, as well as the contemporary R&B, hip-hop or rap radio station that played the song most often during the eligibility period. Songs that samples other songs are not eligible.

The nominees

The nominees for the Billboard Music Award for R&B/Hip-Hop Single of the Year are “The Weekend” by SZA, “Wild Thoughts” by DJ Khaled ft. Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, “ Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)” by Cardi B and “Havana” by Camila Cabello ft. Young Thug.

All four nominees are incredible songs that have topped the charts and been streamed millions of times. But what makes them stand out among the rest?

“The Weekend” is a beautiful, vulnerable love song that showcases SZA’s raw talent. The track is soulful and intimate, with a catchy hook that will stay in your head long after the song is over.

“Wild Thoughts” is a summer anthem with a catchy beat and an addictive hook. Rihanna and Bryson Tiller bring the heat with their verses, making it impossible to resist dancing along.

“Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)” is an unapologetic ode to Cardi B’s success. The track is catchy and empowering, with Cardi B celebrating her accomplishments in a way that is both relatable and aspirational.

Finally, “Havana” is a sultry love song with a Latin twist. Camila Cabello croons about her complicated relationship over a hypnotic beat, resulting in a track that is both sexy and compelling.

The award was renamed to its current title in 2005. The award is given to the artist with the most successful single on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

In 2012, the award was presented to Rihanna for her song “We Found Love”. Rihanna has won the award twice, making her the only artist to win the award more than once.

As of 2020, no artist has won the award more than once.

Why did they win?

The award for R&B/Hip-Hop Single of the Year was first presented to Lauryn Hill for “Doo Wop (That Thing)” at the 1999 Billboard Music Awards.
The award is given to the artist who achieved the highest performance on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart during the eligibility period. The eligibility period is from the issue dated December 6, preceding the awards show to November 30 of the year following.

This year, the award went to Lizzo for her song “Truth Hurts”. Lizzo achieved the highest performance on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart with “Truth Hurts” spending seven weeks at number one.
