The Bloomingdale School of Music Jazz Summer Program: an overview
The Bloomingdale School of Music Jazz Summer Program is a four-week intensive jazz training program for high school and college students. The program is open to students of all levels of playing experience, from beginner to advanced. The program offers instruction in jazz theory, ear training, improvisation, and small and large ensemble playing. In addition, there are daily master classes, clinics, and concerts featuring some of the world’s leading jazz artists. The program culminates in a final concert performance by all the participants.

-Ms. Geri Allen, world-renowned pianist, composer, and member of the Jazz Studies faculty at the Manhattan School of Music
-Mr. Jerry Bergonzi, world-renowned saxophonist and member of the Jazz Studies faculties at Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music
-Mr. Rufus Reid, Grammy Award-winning bassist, composer, educator, and co-founder/co-director of the Bass Collective
The program’s students
The Bloomingdale School of Music Jazz Summer Program is open to all students age 13-18. The program provides an intensive two-week jazz curriculum taught by some of the most renowned jazz educators in the world. Students have the opportunity to participate in master classes, private lessons, jazz band, and combo rehearsals, as well as weekly clinics and concerts. The program culminates in a public concert featuring the togetherness band, combo, and other soloists.
The program’s performances
The Bloomingdale School of Music Jazz Summer Program will be presenting two performances this summer. The first performance will take place on July 7th at the Eisenhower Park Band Shell, and will feature the work of Duke Ellington. The second performance will take place on August 11th at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center, and will feature the work of Miles Davis.
The program’s alumni
Since its inception in 1968, the Bloomingdale School of Music Jazz Summer Program has been attended by some of the most influential and innovative jazz musicians of our time.
