This week, we’ll be featuring some of the most popular venues and bars that offer live blues music. What is the blues?

The blues is a genre of music that originated in the African-American communities of the United States around the end of the 19th century. It is characterized by its use of blue notes, call-and-response patterns, and specific chord progressions, among other elements. The blues has been a major influence on later American and Western popular music, leading to the development of rock and roll, jazz, and country music.

The history of the blues

The term “the blues” has been used since the late 17th century to describe a feeling of melancholy or sadness. The first mention of the blues in print was in 1857, when Hamlin Garland wrote, “So I sang the blues because my heart was full of woe.”

The roots of the blues are in the music of Africa, which was brought to the United States by slaves who were forced to work on plantations in the American South. The slaves would sing work songs while they labored, and these songs often had a blue note—a flattened third, fifth, or seventh note—which gave them a sad or plaintive sound.

As the slaves were freed and migrated to cities like Memphis, New Orleans, and Chicago, they took their music with them and it began to evolve. In the early 20th century, a new style of blues called ragtime emerged, and by the 1920s, jazz musicians were beginning to experiment with electric instruments. These innovations laid the groundwork for what would become known as rock and roll.

Today, the blues can be heard in all types of music, from country to rock to rap. Many popular musicians have cited the blues as an influence on their work, including Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton.
