The show was created by Burt Sugarman and Tom Lawlor, who also served as its executive producers. The Midnight Special programming consisted of popular music acts and occasionally featured an artist appearing in concert before a studio audience, but most often relied on videotaped performances of current hits.
The format included musical performances and interviews with the artists, who were often asked to tell anecdotes about their careers or personal lives. As the program neared the end of its run in the late 1970s, it increasingly relied on reruns of older footage.
