WERS went on the air in 1947 as a 10-watt student-run radio station at Emerson College. The station increased its power to 100 watts in 1971, and became a commercial-free folk music station in 1973. WERS originally broadcast only during daylight hours, to protect other stations on the same frequency; it began broadcasting around the clock in 1975. In 1978, the station moved to new studios in the Tufte Performance and Production Center on Berkeley Street in Boston’s Theater District. In 2007, WERS purchased new HD Radio equipment and began broadcasting in HD Radio.

WGBH Radio first went on the air in 1951 as a 10-watt daytime-only station broadcasting from the campus of Boston University. The station increased its power to 100 watts in 1953, and became a 24-hour station in 1955. In 1957, WGBH Radio moved to its current home on Guest Street in Brighton.
In 1974, WGBH Radio launched Folk New England, a two-hour show that featured traditional and contemporary folk music from New England and beyond. Folk New England was hosted by Bob Dorr until his retirement in 2000. The show is now hosted by Stacy Fraser.
