Introduction
Since its inception in 1963, the Branford Folk Music Society has sought to bring folk music to the people of Branford, Connecticut, and beyond. The Society hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year, from concerts and dances to exploring essay topic sentence workshops and open mics. Whether you’re a seasoned folkie or just getting your feet wet, there’s sure to be something for you at one of our events!
The Branford Folk Music Society
The Branford Folk Music Society (BFMS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, all-volunteer organization whose mission is to bring folk music to the people of Branford, Connecticut, and the surrounding area. We are dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditional music of the region, and to making it accessible to everyone.
What We Do
The Branford Folk Music Society is a volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting traditional and contemporary folk music in the Branford, CT area. We do this through our weekly concerts, monthly sing-arounds, music workshops, and special events. We also maintain a lending library of acoustic instruments and folk music books and CDs.
Our all-ages concerts are held every Sunday night at 7:30 pm from September through May at the First Congregational Church on the Green in Branford (corner of Main St. and Washington St.). Our concerts feature a mix of local, regional, and national touring artists performing traditional and contemporary folk music in a variety of styles including Celtic, old-time, bluegrass, blues, singer-songwriter, and more. Concerts are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors/students/BFM members, $5 for children under 12. Free parking is available behind the church.
Our monthly sing-arounds are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 7:30 pm from September through May at the First Congregational Church on the Green in Branford (corner of Main St. and Washington St.). These sing-arounds are informal gatherings where anyone can come to listen or to participate by singing or playing an acoustic instrument (guitar, banjo, fiddle, hammered dulcimer, etc.). Admission is free; donations are appreciated.
We also offer music workshops throughout the year on a variety of topics ranging from songwriting to fiddle playing to beginning guitar. Workshops are taught by some of the area’s top folk musicians and are open to all levels of experience.
In addition to our regular concerts and events, we also sponsor special events throughout the year including an annual contradance series ( contradance), an old-time music and dance weekend ( Pinewoods Barn Dance), an acoustic guitar summit ( AcousticWeekend), a bluegrass festival ( Pickin’ On The Green ), an annual holiday singalong ( Christmasing ), as well as many other smaller events.
Our History
The Branford Folk Music Society (BFMS) was founded in 1966 by a group of local musicians and music lovers who wanted to share their love of folk music with the community. The BFMS is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization that is dedicated to promoting folk music in all its forms. We offer a variety of events and activities throughout the year, including concerts, dances, workshops, and educational programs. We also maintain an extensive lending library of folk music books, CDs, and DVDs for our members to enjoy.
The BFMS is affiliated with the New England Folk Festival Association (NEFFA) and the Northeast Folk Music Association (NEFMA). We are also a member of the Connecticut Folk Alliance (CFA).

The Society sponsors monthly concerts featuring local, regional, and national performers, as well as workshops and jam sessions. The Society’s concert series began in 1968 with monthly concerts at the First Congregational Church in Branford. In subsequent years, the series was held at various locations around town, including the Blackstone Memorial Library, the Branford Grange Hall, and St. Mary’s Church. In recent years, the concerts have been held at the Firehouse 12 Performance Space in New Haven.
