WKQX (101.1 FM; “Q101”) is a radio station in Chicago, Illinois, United States. It is owned by Cumulus Media, and airs a country music format branded as “Chicago’s Best Country Music Station”. The station’s studios are in the River North neighborhood of Chicago, while its transmitter is atop the Willis Tower.

History

Chicago’s Best Country Music Station – WKQX is a country music radio station in Chicago, Illinois. The station is owned by Entercom.

The station first went on the air in 1948 as WJJD-FM. In the 1970s, the station flipped to a beautiful music format as “The New JJD” under the call letters WNIZ-FM. In 1979, the station became WRZE “Rzeznik FM 106”, a rock music station named after lead singer Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls. The rock format would move to 104.3 FM in 1981 (now WBBM-FM), and 106.7 FM became oldies-formatted WLS-FM.

On June 1, 2001, at Noon, after stunting with country music for two weeks, 106.7 flipped to country as “Chicago’s New Country Q106.7”. The first song on “Q106.7” was “I’m Gonna Getcha Good!” by Shania Twain.

History

Since the late 1960s, WUSN has been Chicago’s go-to country music station. In 1968, the station first signed on as WSDM-FM. The station originally had the call letters WIXY, standing for “Wish You X-Y and Z.” But when the owners of another station with those call letters objected, the station took on the WSDM call letters in 1971. The station kept those call letters until 1983, when it became WLUP-FM, simulcasting the Loop’s programming for a few months before returning to a country music format in 1984. The station has been known as US99 since 1999.

WXRT

WXRT (93.1 FM) – also known as XRT and 91X – is a radio station in Chicago, Illinois. The station broadcasts an adult album alternative format. It first aired in 1972 as an independent station and is currently owned and operated by Entercom. WXRT has been voted as “Chicago’s Best Country Music Station” by the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, and Chicago Reader.

WXRT is a radio station located in Chicago, Illinois. The station broadcasts at 93.1 FM and is owned by Entercom. WXRT plays a Country music format and is one of the few remaining terrestrial radio stations in the Chicago area that still broadcasts this genre of music.

History

In the early days of FM broadcasting, WXRT was one of the first album-oriented rock (AOR) stations in America. The station, which originally broadcast at 96.3 on the FM dial, went on the air on March 21, 1972. At first it played only classical music during the day and jazz at night. But by September 1972, the station had switched to an AOR format around the clock, becoming only the second such station in the country (after Southern California’s famous KLOS). WXRT’s original slogan was “Radio Ninety-Six-Three… X-Rated Radio”.
