The Country Music Association Award for New Artist of the Year has been presented annually since 1965. The award is given to a country music artist who has released a studio album or single during the eligibility period, and achieved national prominence in country music during the year prior to the award ceremony.

The award was first presented in 1965 to The Statler Brothers. Due to a tie, there were two winners in 1967—Tom T. Hall and Barbara Mandrell. Since 1968, there has been only one winner each year. In 1970, after not awarding the prize in 1969, the CMA reintroduced the award as “Most Promising Country Artist”. This title was used until 1973, when it was changed back to “New Artist”.Since 1974, the award has been given simply as “New Artist”, with no pre-determined description of what that means.

Criteria for eligibility

To be eligible for this award, an artist must have released a minimum of five singles/tracks or one album, but no more than two albums, and have achieved prominence in the national arena during the eligibility period.
