Garth Brooks took home the coveted Entertainer of the Year prize at the 2019 Country Music Awards on Wednesday night (Nov. 13). It was his first CMA Entertainer win in 17 years and sixth overall, a record he now shares with Taylor Swift.
“Oh my gosh. I don’t even know what to say,” an emotional Brooks said after accepting the award from presenters Carrie Underwood and Dolly Parton. “This is surreal … I am the guy standing here because of you guys buying tickets, streaming songs, putting this thing we call country music No. 1.”
Brooks also paid tribute to his wife and country icon Trisha Yearwood, calling her “the wind beneath my wings every single day.”
Female Artist of the Year: Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood won Female Artist of the Year at the 2019 Country Music Awards. She is a seven-time Grammy winner and has sold more than 64 million records worldwide. Underwood has been nominated for Female Artist of the Year nine times and has won the award four times.
Male Artist of the Year: Keith Urban
Keith Urban is a New Zealand-born Australian country music singer, songwriter, and record producer. In 1991, he released a self-titled debut album and charted four singles in Australia before moving to the United States the following year. He found work as a session guitarist before starting a solo career in 1999 with the release of his self-titled debut album. The album’s first four singles all topped the Country Airplay chart, while “But for the Grace of God” and “Somebody Like You” also peaked at numbers two and three on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Somebody Like You became his first Number One hit on the Hot Country Songs chart in 2002 and stayed at the top spot for five weeks, giving him his first USNumber One single
Duo of the Year: Florida Georgia Line
This was the third consecutive win for Florida Georgia Line in this category. They are also the only duo to have won this award more than once.
The duo, made up of Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, has been credited with helping to popularize the bro-country genre of music. They have had nine No. 1 singles on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, as well as six No. 1s on the Hot Country Songs chart.

On September 10, 2019, the 49th Annual Country Music Association Awards were held at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena to honor the biggest names in country music. The night’s big winner was Old Dominion, who took home the award for Group of the Year.
Old Dominion is a five-member group consisting of Matthew Ramsey (lead vocals), Trevor Rosen (guitar, keyboard), Brad Tursi (guitar), Geoff Sprung (bass guitar), and Whit Sellers (drums). The band has released three studio albums and one EP since their debut in 2014. Their most recent album, Happy Endings, was released in August 2017 and includes the singles “No Such Thing as a Broken Heart” and “Written in the Sand”.
The group was formed in Nashville in 2007 by Ramsey, Rosen, and Tursi. After years of playing together locally, they were signed to a record deal with Sony Music Nashville in 2013. Old Dominion has since become one of the biggest names in country music, with their songs appearing on several film and television soundtracks.
