The Country Music Chart’s History

The Country Music Chart is a weekly chart that ranks the top-performing country music songs in the United States. The chart is published by Billboard magazine.

The Country Music Chart’s history can be traced back to the 1920s, when radio station WSM in Nashville, Tennessee began broadcasting country music. In 1925, WSM’s owner and General Manager, George D. Hay, created the first ever country music radio show, called the Grand Ole Opry. The show quickly became popular, and in 1927, Hay decided to start publishing a list of the songs that were played on the show. This list eventually became known as the WSM Barn Dance chart.

The WSM Barn Dance chart was published weekly in Billboard magazine until 1934, when it was replaced by the first ever Billboard Country & Western chart. This chart ranked the top 10 country songs in the United States based on sales figures from a number of different Record Companies. The first song to top this chart was “My Overalls Buttons Popping” by Emmett Miller.

Since 1934, the Country Music Chart has undergone a number of changes and redesigns, but it still provides an accurate snapshot of which country songs are popular with American audiences at any given time.
