Reggae
Reggae is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term reggae is derived from rege-rege, a word that was used in Jamaican patois to mean “the king’s music”. Reggae is characterized by a 4/4 time signature, offbeat rhythms (usually played on the snare drum or hi-hat), and accents on the offbeat. Reggae is often instantly recognizable for its use of Rastafarian imagery and themes.

A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, “Do the Reggae” was one of the first uses of the word “reggae”, effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. While sometimes used in a broader sense to refer to most types of popular Jamaican danceable music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that originated following on the development of ska and rocksteady.

A public domain book is one that was never subject to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that’s often difficult to discover.
