“All of Me” by John Legend

“All of Me” is a song by American singer-songwriter John Legend from his fourth studio album Love in the Future (2013). The song was produced by Dave Tozer and Legend, and written by Toby Gad and Legend. It was released as the third single from the album on August 12, 2013. A pop and R&B ballad, “All of Me” lyrically describes how a man is dedicated to his wife through thick andthin.

Legend’s wife Chrissy Teigen appears in the music video. The single peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Legend’s first number-one single in the United States, selling 438,000 copies in its first week of release. As of June 2017, it has sold 4.7 million digital copies in the United States.

A live version of “All of Me” was nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 57th Grammy Awards (2015).

“Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol

“Chasing Cars” is a 2006 ballad by British alternative rock band Snow Patrol. The song was written by the band’s lead singer Gary Lightbody and produced by Jacknife Lee. It was released as the second single from their fourth studio album, Eyes Open (2006). “Chasing Cars” peaked at number 6 on the UK Singles Chart in July 2006 and became the band’s biggest hit in the United States, reaching number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 2007. In 2013, Billboard ranked it as the 36th-biggest song of all-time on its Billboard Hot 100 Songs of All Time anniversary list. The song has sold more than 7 million copies worldwide.

The song is written in the key of A-flat major and has a moderate tempo of 84 beats per minute. Lightbody’s vocal range spans from G3 to E5. The piano part uses a I-ii-iii-IV chord progression throughout most of the song with a few exceptions.

Swift wrote the song about a love interest whom she never actually met. However, many aspects of the song’s plotline were based on Swift’s real life experience with Joe Jonas in July 2008. The opening line, “We were both young when I first saw you”, is a reference to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement announcement in November 2010, which took place while Swift was dating Conor Kennedy.

The song is primarily accompanied by an acoustic guitar and features minimalistic production. Lyrically, the track speaks of young romantic love and everlasting love. Upon release, “Love Story” became Swift’s first number one single on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and her second consecutive top ten pop single. In the United Kingdom, the song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart—becoming both Swift’s first number two hit and her highest-charting single in that country—only behind Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love” (2007). The song was written by Adele and Dan Wilson for her album 21. It is a piano ballad with soul influences, and lyrics that describe the sentiment of losing someone you loved.

The song received commercial success, reaching #1 in several countries, and has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time. In the United Kingdom, the song spent five weeks at number one and became the best-selling single of 2011 with sales of over 1.8 million copies. In February 2012, “Someone Like You” won two Grammy Awards for Best Pop Solo Performance and Record of the Year. The music video won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video in 2012.

“Stay with Me” by Sam Smith

“Stay with Me” is a song by English singer Sam Smith from his debut studio album In the Lonely Hour (2014). It was released in the United States on 14 April 2014 and in the United Kingdom on 18 May 2014. “Stay with Me” is a gospel-tinged pop ballad which samples “I Won’t Back Down” by American rocker Tom Petty. It has also been compared to Whitney Houston’s 1985 hit single “Saving All My Love for You”. Upon its release, “Stay with Me” became an international commercial success, reaching number one in several countries including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa. In the United States, it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been certified double-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

An accompanying music video was directed by Jamie Thraves and released on 21 May 2014. The video features Smith waking up next to a man (played by model Jay Camilleri) after spending what appears to be a one-night stand; as he prepares to leave, Smith tries to get the man’s attention so that he will stay with him. He leaves without getting a response. The video ends with Smith singing the last chorus directly to the camera against a burning house backdrop. Upon its release, critics praised “Stay with Me”‘s sound and Sam Smith’s vocal performance. Some critics also complimented its lyrical content for being too relatable and sentimental.

“Thinking Out Loud” is a song by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. It was included on his second studio album, x (2014), and was released as the third single from the album on 7 October 2014. The song became a massive commercial success, peaked at number one in twelve countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia and Germany, and reached the top ten in almost thirty others. In 2015, “Thinking Out Loud” won two Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

“A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri

“A Thousand Years” is a song by American singer-songwriter Christina Perri and serves as the lead single from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 soundtrack. The song was released on October 18, 2011. “A Thousand Years” received positive reviews, with critics praising Perri’s vocal performance and the lyrics. It appeared in several year-end lists of best songs and has been certified quadruple platinum in the United States. A music video was created for the song, featuring footage from Breaking Dawn – Part 2.

Perri wrote “A Thousand Years” about her then-boyfriend now husband, Paul Costabile. They had been together for four months when she wrote the song; they subsequently broke up and got back together after getting engaged during Christmas week in 2009.
