The Phantom of the Opera
The Phantom of the Opera is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe. Based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, its central character is a masked figure who, because of a disfigured face, is shunned by society. The phantom falls in love with Christine Daaé, a beautiful young opera singer, and becomes obsessed with making her a star.
The Story
Based on the 1910 horror novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls fiercely in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods at his disposal.
The Characters
Thecentral character in The Phantom of the Opera is, of course,the Phantom himself. Born with a deformity that has left him with afacial disfigurement, the Phantom is a musical genius wholives below the Paris Opera House. He is in love with the operahouse’s leading lady, Christine Daaé, and will do anything to make hera star.
Christineis the object of the Phantom’s affections. A young woman from asimple background, she has been given the chance to perform at theParis Opera House. She is initially frightened of the Phantom, butsoon comes to appreciate his musical talent and falls in love withhim.
Raoulis Christine’s childhood friend and eventual love interest. Arich man from a noble family, he is initially repulsed by thePhantom’s deformity but comes to see him as a danger to Christineand sets out to stop him.
The Music
All of the music from The Phantom of the Opera is absolutely free. You can find it on YouTube, SoundCloud, and a number of other websites. The music is composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and is some of the most beautiful music ever written.
The Score
Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the musical’s score, excepting a few sections written by Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. The full score was not released until recent years; prior to that only piano/vocal selections were available. Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh expressed hope that a complete recording of the musical would one day be made available. In 2010, really successful film producer Joel Surnow announced that he had optioned the rights to make a new feature film of The Phantom of the Opera, with Harold Prince as director, but no further announcements have been made.
The Songs

In 1989, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
