The piece was an instant sensation and launched Gershwin’s career as a serious composer. He went on to write several successful Broadway musicals, including “Oh, Kay!,” “Funny Face,” and “Girl Crazy.”
Gershwin’s biggest success came with his opera “Porgy and Bess.” The work debuted on Broadway in 1935 and was met with mixed reviews.
