The Wailers

If there’s one reggae band that’s still touring and keeping the music alive, it’s The Wailers. The Wailers were founded in 1963 by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer. They are considered to be one of the best reggae bands of all time.

Biography

The Wailers were a Jamaican reggae band created by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. The band started out as The Wailing Rudeboys, and later changed their name to The Wailing Wailers, before finally settling on The Wailers.

The original lineup of the band consisted of Marley, Tosh, Wailer, Junior Braithwaite, Beverly Kelso, and Cherry Smith. Smith and Braithwaite both left the band in 1965, while Kelso was replaced by Constantine “Dean” Foulkes in 1966.

The Wailers were one of the most influential reggae bands of all time. They are credited with helping to spread reggae music to a global audience and were one of the first Jamaican groups to achieve international success.

The band released their debut album, The Wailing Wailers, in 1965. This was followed by a string of successful albums including Catch a Fire (1972), Burnin’ (1973), Natty Dread (1974), Rastaman Vibration (1976), Exodus (1977), and Kaya (1978).

The Wailers disbanded in 1981 after the death of Bob Marley. Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh both went on to have successful solo careers, while the remaining members formed The Original Wailers Band, which continues to perform Marley’s music today.

Biography

Robert Nesta “Bob” Marley, OM (6 February 1945 – 11 May 1981) was a Jamaican singer-songwriter who became an international musical and cultural icon, blending mostly reggae, ska, and rocksteady in his compositions. Starting out in 1963 with the group the Wailers, he forged a distinctive songwriting and vocal style that would later resonate with audiences worldwide. The Wailers would go on to release some of the earliest reggae records with producer Lee “Scratch” Perry.

After the Wailers disbanded in 1974, Marley pursued a solo career which culminated in the release of the album Exodus in 1977 which established his worldwide reputation and produced his status as one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, with sales of more than 75 million records. Exodus stayed on British album charts for 56 consecutive weeks. It included four UK hit singles: “Exodus”, “Waiting in Vain”, “Jamming”, and “One Love”. In 1978 he released Kaya, which included the hit singles “Is This Love” and “Satisfy My Soul”. Iration Steppas originally named their soundsystem after one of Marley’s lyrics from Satisfy My Soul: “…it’s all right… searching my relevance to remember my nights…”

A few months before his death, Marley was diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma, a rare form of cancer that originated on his toe. During 1980 he partially lost his right big toe to amputation as a result of this disease. Marley died on 11 May 1981 at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital (now Cedars-Sinai Medical Center) in Miami at age 36.

Stephen Robert Nesta “Raggamuffin” Marley is a Jamaican reggae musician who is the son of reggae legend Bob Marley and singer Rita Marley. As a solo artist, Marley has released three studio albums, as well as several singles and collaborations with other artists. He won two Grammy Awards for his work on his father’s posthumous album, Legend.

Marley was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on April 20, 1972. He is the eighth of eleven children born to Bob Marley and Rita Marley. His mother was a member of the I Three, who were backing singers for his father. Growing up in a musical household exposed Stephen to all genres of music, including reggae, which would later become his passion and focus.

In 1987, at the age of fifteen, Stephen formed the band Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers with siblings Ziggy and Sharon Marley; Soujah Fiya; Stephen’s half-brothers Robert Nesto and Daniel Roberts; and Jerome Wagner. The Melody Makers released their debut album Listen Up! in 1988 when Stephen was just sixteen years old. The album contained the hit single “Tomorrow People”, which went on to become an international success.
