With their second album, 1992’s Dirt, Alice in Chains became one of the most successful bands of that decade. The album has been certified diamond by the RIAA with sales of over 16 million copies worldwide and is widely acclaimed as one of the greatest albums of all time. The band’s third album, Alice in Chains (1995), was also highly successful; it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and went on to be certified quadruple-platinum by the RIAA. Alice in Chains disbanded in 1996 due to internal strife over substance abuse issues; however, they reunited in 2005 for a benefit show and subsequently toured with new vocalist William DuVall taking over Staley’s role before making new studio albums Black Gives Way to Blue (2009) and The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here (2013). Soundgarden

Soundgarden is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984 by singer and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Matt Cameron became the band’s full-time drummer in 1986 while bassist Ben Shepherd became a permanent replacement for Yamamoto in 1990.

The band built its reputation as part of the Seattle music scene and was one of the grunge bands that signed to the independent label Sub Pop. The band released its debut album, Ultramega OK (1988), and toured in support of it for a year before releasing Louder Than Love (1989). Soundgarden achieved its biggest success with Badmotorfinger (1991) and Superunknown (1994), which brought the band mainstream success with the singles “Spoonman”, “Fell on Black Days”, “Black Hole Sun”, “My Wave”, and “Blow Up the Outside World”. In 1997, the band broke up due to internal strife over its creative direction.

After more than a decade of working on solo projects, Cornell reunited with Soundgarden in 2010 and they released their sixth studio album, King Animal, two years later. Soundgarden was one of the seminal bands of the 1990s grunge movement. The band’s third studio album, 1996’s Down on the Upside, was not as successful as its predecessors; however it still managed to sell more than two million copies worldwide. In 1997, following touring in support of Down on the Upside, tensions within the band—primarily between Cornell and Thayil—led to its breakup.

Stone Temple Pilots

Stone Temple Pilots was one of the most successful grunge bands of the early 1990s. The band’s musical style combined elements of hard rock, psychedelic rock, and heavy metal.
