Defining Hip Hop

There are four elements that define hip hop music: MCing, DJing, graffiti, and break dancing. These elements originated in New York City in the 1970s. DJing is when a DJ creates a song using different tracks, MCing is rhyming over a beat, break dancing is a style of street dance, and graffiti is an artistic expression using spray paint.

Where did Hip Hop originate?

Hip hop music originated in the Bronx, New York City, in the 1970s. It consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, which includes break dancing, graffiti art, and rap.

What are the four elements of Hip Hop?

The four elements of hip hop are MCing, DJing, graffiti writing, and break dancing. These elements are both distinct from and intertwined with one another. MCing, or rapping, is the vocal delivery of rhythmic lyrics. DJing is the use of turntables to play recorded music, often to accompany other rappers. Graffiti writing is the use of spray paint to create often elaborate pictures or words on walls or other surfaces in public spaces. And break dancing is a form of street dance that emerged from the hip hop movement.

The History of Halloween

Halloween is an annual holiday celebrated each year on October 31, and Halloween 2020 will be no different. In the United States, Halloween has become one of the biggest holidays of the year. Today, people of all ages celebrate Halloween by dressing up in costumes, going to parties, and by decorating their homes.

What are the origins of Halloween?

Halloween is a holiday with ancient roots that crosses cultures and continents. Although its exact origins are unknown, Halloween is thought to have started as a pagan holiday in Ireland and Britain. Celtics used the holiday to mark the end of summer and the beginning of winter. They believed that on October 31, the boundary between the worlds of the living and dead dissolved and ghosts roamed the earth.

The Celts also built massive bonfires, where they roasted pigs and other animals as sacrifices to their gods. People wore costumes made of animal skins to scare away ghosts. In time, Halloween became a day to not only honor ancestors and deities, but also to ward off evil spirits.

Halloween didn’t become widely celebrated in America until the 19th century when large numbers of Irish immigrants fleeing the Potato Famine settled in Boston, New York City, and other cities on the East Coast. By the early 20th century, Halloween had become a national holiday in America complete with costume parties, trick-or-treating, apple bobbing, and festive meals.

How did Halloween become a holiday?

Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that ghosts of the dead returned to earth.
