About the Song

“Heart and Soul” is a song composed by Hoagy Carmichael with lyrics by Frank Loesser. It was first recorded in 1938 by Larry Clinton and his Orchestra with Bea Wain on vocals. The song charted in 1939 and became a standard.

The song is simple to play but sounds complex when played correctly. It has been used in various media, including the film Academy Award-winning Shine, the television show Ally McBeal, and the video game Elite Beat Agents.

The Composer

Hoagy Carmichael was born on November 22, 1899, in Bloomington, Indiana. Carmichael’s mother was a classically trained pianist who introduced her young son to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Franz Schubert. Carmichael later recalled that his mother “made it plain that she thought a man who couldn’t compose was little better than a grunt.”

Carmichael’s father, Howard Clyde Carmichael, was a lawyer and state senator. Howard Carmichael instilled in his son a love of literature and encouraged him to read widely. Hoagy later said that his father “wanted me to be exposed to all the greats … He turned me on to Robert Louis Stevenson, Captain Marryat, Charles Dickens—anything he could get his hands on.”

In 1916, Hoagy enrolled at Princeton University intending to study architecture. However, he soon became more interested in music and transferred to the university’s music conservatory. There he studied composition with John Powell and counterpoint with Otto Luening. Carmichael also played piano in the school’s jazz band and composed several songs while at Princeton.
