Introduction
Heavy metal music is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. The genre’s lyrics and performance styles are sometimes associated with aggression and machismo.
In 1970, four landmark albums were released that defined the Heavy Metal genre: Black Sabbath’s Paranoid, Led Zeppelin’s Led Zeppelin IV, Deep Purple’s In Rock and Blue Öyster Cult’s self-titled debut album. These four albums have been cited as influential to the development of the genre. Paranoid was voted the greatest album of all time in a major 2006 BBC poll. In 2004, In Rock was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Metallica
Metallica is an American heavy metal band. The band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California by drummer Lars Ulrich and vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield, and has been based in San Francisco, California for most of its career. The group’s fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship placed them as one of the founding “big four” bands of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer. Metallica’s current lineup comprises founding members Hetfield and Ulrich, longtime lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo. Guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to form Megadeth) and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton (who died in 1986) and Jason Newsted are former members of the band.
Metallica earned a growing fan base in the underground music community and won critical acclaim with its first four albums; their third album Master of Puppets (1986) was described as one of the heaviest and most influential thrash metal albums. Metallica achieved substantial commercial success with their eponymous fifth album Metallica (1991), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200; it sold approximately 16 million copies worldwide and was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping over 15 million units in the United States. With this release the band expanded its musical direction resulting in an album that appeal to a more mainstream audience. In 2000, Metallica was among several artists who filed a lawsuit against Napster for sharing copyrighted material; a settlement was reached between all parties.
