History

The concept was first proposed in 1961 by famed fiddler Hank Snow and CMA board member Harold Wyrick. The project was officially announced in 1963 with original plans to build the museum on Nashville’s famous Music Row. As interest in the project grew, so did the plans, and eventually, the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum was constructed on a full city block in downtown Nashville. It opened its doors on April 1, 1967, with an exhibition chronicling the history of country music up to that point. The Hall of Fame itself would not come into existence until 1973 when Jimmie Rodgers and Fred Rose were inducted. Today, more than 100 artists have been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame®, making it one of the genre’s most prestigious institutions.
