IHeartRadio Music Awards

The IHeartRadio Music Award for Hip-Hop Artist of the Year is an award presented annually by the American radio station iHeartRadio. The hip-hop artist of the year is selected by the staff of iHeartRadio based on chart performance, album sales, radio airplay, and social media activity. The award was first presented in 2014.

History of the IHeartRadio Music Awards

The IHeartRadio Music Awards is an annual music awards show, founded by iHeartRadio in 2014 to recognize the most popular artists and music over the past year as determined by the network’s listeners. It is one of several annual awards shows held by iHeartRadio, with its sister show being the iHeartRadio Podcast Awards.

The inaugural edition of the award show was held on May 1, 2014 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. The show was hosted by Ryan Seacrest and featured performances by such artists as Blake Shelton, Pharrell Williams, Rihanna, Thirty Seconds to Mars, and Carrie Underwood.

In 2015, the show expanded to include awards for best live performance and best cover song. Additionally, three new award categories were added: Hip-Hop Artist of the Year, Rock Artist of the Year, and EDM Artist of the Year. The second annual edition of the awards show was held on April 3, 2015 at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium once again hosted by Ryan Seacrest.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions placed on public gatherings in 2020, the third annual IHeartRadio Music Awards ceremony was not held. However, several special awards were handed out virtually throughout the year to acknowledge outstanding achievements in music during 2020. The fourth annual edition of the IHeartRadio Music Awards is scheduled to take place on May 27, 2021.
