Nirvana
Nirvana was an American rock band formed by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, the longest-lasting being Dave Grohl, who joined in 1990. Though often referred to as a grunge band, the style of their music incorporated heavy metal, punk rock, and indie rock. They initially built a grassroots fanbase through constant live performances and frequent releases on independent record labels. Despite success followed by fame and wealth due to the success of their 1991 debut album Nevermind, Nirvana’s brief run ended upon the death of Cobain in 1994. Since their debut album Bleach was released on an independent record label in 1989, Nirvana found unexpected success with Nevermind after signing with major label DGC Records. It became a global hit in early 1992 after the release of its first single Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Nirvana’s third studio album In Utero (1993) was also a critical and commercial success. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart and was hailed as a return to the band’s earlier abrasive sound. Following extensive touring throughout Europe and North America in 1994, Nirvana performed just once in 1995: at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York City on September 7, where they announced that they were breaking up immediately afterward. NME considered it to be one of the greatest live performances of all time.
Metallica
Metallica’s version of “In the Pines” was recorded in 1998 for the album Garage, Inc. It is based on various interpretations of the traditional folk song “In the Pines”, which date back to the late 19th century. Metallica’s version is a slow, atmospheric ballad that features James Hetfield’s melancholy vocals and Kirk Hammett’s emotive lead guitar work. The song is one of the band’s most popular non-single tracks, and has been covered by numerous other artists.
