No Depression is a semi-monthly online magazine devoted to a genre of music often called alt-country, a term used to describe a musical movement that arose in the 1990s as a result of the collaboration between country musicians and indie rockers.
No Depression takes its name from the seminal Uncle Tupelo album of the same name, which is widely considered to be the inaugural release of the alt-country genre. The magazine was launched in May 1995 by co-editors/co-publishers Grant Alden and Peter Blackstock, with technical assistance from Rainy Orteca. It was originally intended as a print fanzine to serve the North American region of the burgeoning No Depression music scene; however, demand for the magazine soon outstripped its supply, and in January 1996, No Depression became an online publication.
In March 2007, Alden and Blackstock sold No Depression to Everett True, longtime editor of London’s Plan B magazine. Under True’s stewardship, No Depression expanded its coverage beyond alt-country and Americana to include roots rock, soul, R&B, blues, folk, and pop. In October 2008, True hired Hannah Mayonnaise (a.k.a. Managing Editor Kim Ruehl) as Senior Editor.
In 2009, No Depression experienced several changes: longtime columnist Frederick Barthelme began writing a monthly column for The Wall Street Journal; concurrently, Grammy Award-winning journalist Dave Marsh joined ND as a regular contributor; also that year saw an increase in content from international artists and writers. In January 2010 Senior Editor Hannah Mayonnaise left No Depression; she was replaced by Kathy Fleischmann in March of that year. And in June 2010 long-time features editor Lydia Hutchinson departed ND; her replacement was announced later that summer.
