The Dubliners
The Dubliners are an Irish folk band founded in Dublin, Ireland in 1962. The band originally consisted of Luke Kelly (vocals, banjo), Barney McKenna (vocals, tenor banjo), Ronnie Drew (vocals, guitar), Ciarán Bourke (vocals, tin whistle) and John Sheahan (fiddle). The Dubliners have been influential in bringing Irish traditional music to a wider audience both in Ireland and internationally.
The band has released over 30 albums and they continue to tour throughout Europe and the US. They have also been featured on several film and television soundtracks including The Commitments and Once. In 2012, they were Inducted into the Irish Music Hall of Fame.
The Pogues
The Pogues are an Irish-American Celtic punk band formed in London in 1982, as part of the Post-Punk musical movement. The band reached international prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The Pogues mix traditional Irish music and folk with Punk rock attitude. The group has suffered numerous lineup changes, but held together long enough to record seven studio albums. The band’s name comes from the Irish word pogue, meaning “kiss,” which is derived from the Old English word pogge.
The Chieftains
The Chieftains are a multiple Grammy Award-winning Irish musical ensemble founded in Dublin in 1963. Known for their work with traditional Irish instruments like the uilleann pipes and tin whistle, they have helped popularize Irish folk music around the world. With over 50 albums released, they are one of the most prolific and best-selling folk bands of all time.
The band’s founder and leader is Paddy Moloney, who also plays the uilleann pipes. He is joined by a rotating cast of musicians, many of whom are also accomplished soloists in their own right. The Chieftains have collaborated with some of the biggest names in music, including Van Morrison, Sting, The Rolling Stones, Ry Cooder, and Pink Floyd.
