Irish Folk Music

Grattan Flood wrote that, in Gaelic Ireland, there were at least ten instruments in general use. These were the cruit (a small harp with between 10 and 30 strings), the clairseach (a small harp with between 22 and 38 strings), the buinne (literally, a “finger-hole”, probably a type of flute or whistle), the bodhran (a handheld frame drum covered with animal skin), the tambourine, the fiddle, the uilleann pipes, the Bagpipe, the wire-strung harp played with a plettrum called a plectrum or bailë instruments including jaw harps and mouth organs. Irish traditional music has remained vibrant throughout the centuries, despite globalisation and other cultural changes.
Contemporary Irish music
Although, at its core, Irish folk music is based on traditional songs and tunes, it has undergone a considerable transformation since the 1960s, owing to the influence of musicians such as Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, who introduced new instrumental styles and themes from the politics and social commentary of their own countries. In addition, the work of broadcaster and musicologist Alan Lomax did much to raise the profile of folk music in general and Irish folk music in particular.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Ireland saw a resurgence in traditional music with the advent of groups like the Chieftains and Planxty. These bands brought traditional Irish music to a wider audience through their recordings and live performances. In more recent years, Irish folk music has been influenced by such artists as Nuala Kennedy, Julie Fowlis and Cathal Hayden.
