Best Jazz Albums to Chill Out to This Summer

Miles Davis – Kind of Blue

Miles Davis – Kind of Blue is one of the best jazz albums to chill out to this summer. This album was released in 1959 and is considered one of the most influential jazz albums of all time. It features some of Davis’ most famous musicians, including John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley. The music is mellow and relaxing, making it the perfect album to put on when you want to unwind.

John Coltrane – A Love Supreme

Recorded in December 1964, released the following year, A Love Supreme is one of the most important and influential jazz albums ever made. It’s also one of the most personal, a direct expression of John Coltrane’s faith and spirituality. The record is built around a simple four-note motif, which is repeated over and over again in various permutations by Coltrane and his bandmates (pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones). But as the album unfolds, these motifs become increasingly complex, as if to represent Coltrane’s own journey toward enlightenment. The result is a deeply moving and spiritually uplifting piece of music that remains as vital today as it was 50 years ago.

Thelonious Monk – Monk’s Dream

If you need something to cool you down this summer, look no further than Thelonious Monk’s “Monk’s Dream.” Recorded in February of 1963, this album is the perfect mix of Monk’s playful melodies and cascading chord progressions. While it may not be the typical “chill out” music, the album’s energy is perfect for those hot summer days.

Bill Evans – Waltz for Debby

much like the rest of his work, the album is understated, emotional and completely absorbing. Perfect for those moments when you just need to relax and let the music wash over you.

Chet Baker – Chet

Chet Baker’s second album for Pacific Jazz features his sparse, cool trumpet playing breaking through the arrangements by Gerry Mulligan (baritone sax), Russ Freeman (piano), Joe Mondragon (bass), and Shelly Manne (drums). It’s more stripped-down and less complex than Mulligan’s usual work with Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. This gives Baker’s playing more room to breathe, and he passes the challenge with some of his smoothest and most lyrical work on record up to this point. The tunes are standards like “That Old Black Magic,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Just Friends,” “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To,” and “Everything Happens to Me” plus one original by Mulligan. It all works beautifully, with each player at the top of their form.

Conclusion

We hope you enjoyed our 3 hour playlist of some of the best jazz tunes to help you relax this summer! Whether you’re kicking back on the beach or just taking a break from the heat, these tracks are sure to provide the perfect chilled out vibe. So grab a cold drink, sit back, and enjoy the music!
