Jazz music is a genre of music that originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in African American communities in the Southern United States. Its roots are in West African cultural and musical traditions, and in African American folk music. Jazz is seen by many as “America’s classical music”. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, jazz has become recognized as a major form of musical expression. There are many different types of jazz, including:
-Dixieland: Also known as Traditional Jazz or Classic Jazz, Dixieland is the earliest style of jazz. It originated in New Orleans around 1895, and was based on a combination of European harmonic structure with African rhythms and improvised soloing. -Swing: Swing is a subgenre of jazz that developed in the early 1930s and had its height during the 1930s and 1940s. 4. How Jazz Music is Made

A lot of people think that jazz is easy to play because it has a lot of improvisation. However, to truly master the art of jazz, one needs to have a deep understanding of music theory as well as know how to improvise within the parameters of the song.

Jazz is usually played with a combo, which is a small group of instruments. The most common instruments in a jazz combo are piano, drums, double bass or guitar, and one or more horns such as trumpet, trombone or saxophone. The piano and bass provide the harmony; the drums keep time; and the horns improvise over the chord changes.

The chords in jazz are usually upper structures triads, which are three notes played together. These triads are built off of each other and create tension and release within the song. The player soloing will often use these chord changes to create interesting lines.

Jazz music is made up of many different elements including swing, bebop, bossa nova, modal jazz, jazz-funk and many more. Each subgenre has its own distinct feel and sound. It is important for a jazz musician to be able to identify these different styles and know how to play them.
