About Jill Scott

Jill Scott (born April 4, 1972) is an American singer-songwriter, model, poet and actress. Her 2000 debut album, Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, went platinum and garnered two Grammy Award nominations. She won a Grammy for her work on The Roots’ album Wake Up!. Scott has released three studio albums, one live album and one compilation album.

Scott was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She grew up an only child in a North Philadelphia neighborhood where she was raised by her mother, Joyce Scott, and her grandmother. She is a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating from high school in 1990, Scott attended Temple University while simultaneously working two jobs. During this time she studied humanities and taught creative writing; however, after two years at Temple she dropped out due to inferior grades caused by constantly working instead of studying. When Scott left Temple she began to focus on music instead of schoolwork.

Scott began her singing career with local band Midnight Star which recorded three albums: The Moment of Truth (1993), Planetary Invasion (1994) and No Parking (on the Dance Floor) (1996). In 1999 she was featured on The Roots’ hit single “You Got Me” from their fourth album Things Fall Apart. That same year Jill Scott debuted with Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol 1; it rose to number 27 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and went Platinum.
