Formative Years (1969-1976)

Judas Priest are an English heavy metal band that formed in West Bromwich in 1969. The band has sold over 50 million copies of their albums to date. They are frequently ranked as one of the greatest metal bands of all time.

The band’s first album, Rocka Rolla, was released in 1974 and did not sell well. Their second album, Sad Wings of Destiny, was released in 1976 and is considered a classic of the heavy metal genre. It was followed by 1977’s Sin After Sin and 1978’s Stained Class. Judas Priest’s breakthrough album was 1980’s British Steel, which spawned the hits “Living After Midnight” and “Breaking the Law”.

The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (1976-1981)

The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) was a musical movement that started in the late 1970s, and gained mainstream success in the early to mid-1980s. NWOBHM bands rejected the existing punk rock and hard rock scenes of the time, instead of creating their own style by blending together blues rock with elements of heavy metal.

Judas Priest were one of the most successful NWOBHM bands, with their first album Rocka Rolla (1974) receiving critical acclaim from music journalists. The band’s popularity increased with the release of their second album Sad Wings of Destiny (1976), which included the song “Victim of Changes” which is often considered to be one of their best songs. The band’s next two albums, Sin After Sin (1977) and Stained Class (1978), were also received well by critics.

In 1980, Judas Priest released British Steel, which was their commercial breakthrough album in the United States. The album includes some of the band’s most famous songs, such as “Breaking the Law” and “Living After Midnight”. The album was followed by a successful world tour, during which guitarist K.K. Downing left the band and was replaced by tunesmith Ian Hill.

The band’s next album was 1982’s Screaming for Vengeance, which topped the charts in several countries and included the hit single “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'”. This was followed by another successful world tour, during which Judas Priest headlined at Donington Park for two consecutive years (1982 and 1983).

By 1984, Judas Priest had become one of the most successful heavy metal bands in history, with both commercial and critical success. The band continued to enjoy success throughout the 1980s and 1990s with a string of hit albums and singles such as “Turbo Lover”, “Painkiller”, and “Living After Midnight”. Judas Priest is still active today and continues to tour regularly all over the world.

The ’80s and Beyond (1982-Present)

The eighties were a decade of change for Judas Priest. In 1982, the band released Screaming for Vengeance, which saw them finally break through to the American mainstream, due in part to the commercial success of the single “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'”, which became one of their signature songs. The album was a massive success, selling over two million copies in the United States alone and cementing Judas Priest’s status as one of the biggest metal bands in the world.

The band followed up Screaming for Vengeance with the less successful but still widely acclaimed Defenders of the Faith in 1984. The album was a return to a more heavy metal sound after the more pop-oriented direction of Screaming for Vengeance and was another commercial success, going platinum in the United States and reaching #4 on the UK charts.

1986 saw the release of Turbo, which was Judas Priest’s most commercially successful album to date. The album featured a more polished sound and was heavier than its predecessor, Defenders of the Faith. Turbo was also notable for its use of synthesizers, which were becoming increasingly popular in heavy metal at the time. The album’s lead single, “Turbo Lover”, became one of Judas Priest’s most popular songs and helped propel Turbo to sales of over four million copies worldwide.

Following the release of Turbo, Judas Priest embarked on a successful world tour that saw them playing to packed arenas and stadiums across America and Europe. However, not long after the tour ended, guitarist K.K. Downing announced his retirement from Judas Priest due to health issues. He was replaced by former Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Travis, who made his debut with the band on their 1990 album Painkiller.

Painkiller was another commercial and critical success for Judas Priest, debuting at #6 on Billboard’s 200 chart and earning rave reviews from critics. The album featured a more aggressive sound than previous Judas Priest albums and cemented Scott Travis as a member of the band. Following its release, Judas Priest embarked on another world tour that lasted over two years and saw them playing to sold-out crowds around the globe.

In 1991, Judas Priest were inducted into the newly-established Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their legacy as one of heavy metal’s most influential bands. They continue to tour and release new music today and are widely considered to be one of metal’s all-time greats.

Disc One of The Music Box Set contains Judas Priest’s earliest material, recorded between 1969 and 1977. This period saw the band’s sound evolve from proto-metal to the beginnings of their legendary heavy metal sound. Included are such fan favorites as “Victim of Changes” and “Exciter,” as well as the band’s cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil.”

Disc Two: The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (1976-1981)

The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) was a musical movement that started in the late 1970s, in the United Kingdom, and achieved international attention by the early 1980s. The movement developed as a reaction in part to the decline of early 1970s progressive rock, and was also influenced by the rise of punk rock.

The New Wave of British Heavy Metal attempted to revitalize heavy metal music that had become less challenging and more commercially oriented. Though initially a underground phenomenon, the NWOBHM began to reach a wider audience with bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead and Saxon.

NWOBHM bands influenced later movements such as gothic metal, power metal and black metal. Many NWOBHM bands broke up or became less active by the mid-1980s, but still remain influential today.

Disc Three: The ’80s and Beyond (1982-Present)

The third disc of this collection features a more modern Judas Priest, with tracks like “Painkiller” and “Electric Eye.” This disc also includes newer tracks like ” Angel” from the band’s most recent album, Firepower.
