Although similar to his past albums The Blueprint (2001) and The Black Album (2003), Magna Carta Holy Grail departs from thematic content of those albums to focus more on societal issues and hip hop’s place within them. ‘Picasso Baby’, ‘Tom Ford’, ‘BBC’, and ‘Somewhereinamerica’ are considered among the best tracks on the album according to Metacritic.

Magna Carta Holy Grail was nominated for five Grammy Awards at the 56th Grammy Awards: Best Rap Performance (“Holy Grail”), Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (“Part II (On the Run)” with BeyoncĂ©), Best Rap Song (“Holy Grail”), Best Rap Album, and Album of the Year (as a co-producer).

On top of that, Timberlake co-starred in one of the year’s biggest movies, Inside Llewyn Davis. It was a big year for JT, and he continued to show why he’s one of pop’s biggest superstars.

Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars is an American singer-songwriter and record producer. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, by a family of musicians, Mars began making music at a young age. He performed in various local venues throughout his childhood. After graduating from high school, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a musical career.

Mars’ first two singles “Locked Out of Heaven” and “When I Was Your Man” from his second studio album, Unorthodox Jukebox (2012), peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album’s third single “Treasure” became Mars’ fourth chart topper on the Hot 100, making him the first male artist to achieve that feat since Michael Jackson in 1995. With his first five singles all reaching number one on the Hot 100, Mars became only the sixth artist overall in the Nielsen SoundScan era (since 1991) to achieve that many number one singles from a single album. Unorthodox Jukebox later went on to win Best Pop Vocal Album at both the 2014 Grammy Awards and the Billboard Music Awards in early 2014. The album’s sixth single “Young Girls” peaked within the top 40 of multiple international charts including Australia, France and New Zealand while peaking at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In late 2014 and early 2015, he collaborated with Mark Ronson on “Uptown Funk”, which topped multiple international charts including becoming Mars’ fifth US number-one single as well as Ronson’s fourth UK number-one single. The song won Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at 58th Grammy Awards held in February 2016.
