The Midland Folk Music Society is a not-for-profit organisation which promotes folk music in the Midlands region of England.

What is the Midland Folk Music Society?

The Midland Folk Music Society was founded in 1965 to promote the study, preservation, and performance of traditional folk music, dance, and related crafts. We are a non-profit educational organization located in Midland, Michigan.

We sponsor weekly contra dances and monthly old-time and bluegrass dances, along with an annual contra dance weekend and an annual old-time music weekend. We also present concerts featuring national and local traditional musicians, hold workshops on various aspects of folk music and dance, and publishe a quarterly newsletter.

The Midland Folk Music Society’s History

The Midland Folk Music Society (MFMS) was founded in Birmingham, UK in 1951 by a small group of enthusiasts who shared a love of traditional music from Britain and Ireland. The Society was formally established as a registered charity in 1954.

Over the years, the Society has continued to grow and now has a membership of over 400 people. We hold regular meetings, concerts and events throughout the year, and our members include both performers and listeners of all ages and levels of experience.

The Midland Folk Music Society is a vibrant, active community of folk music lovers in the Midlands region of England. Today, the Society is a thriving organisation with over 500 members, and is one of the largest folk music societies in the country.

The Society organises a wide range of events and activities throughout the year, including live music concerts, workshops, dance evenings, singarounds and open mic nights. Members can also take part in regular social events, such as pub evenings and coffee mornings.

The Midland Folk Music Society’s Concerts

The Midland Folk Music Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization whose mission is to present and preserve folk music and dance traditions, primarily of the British Isles, for the benefit of its members and the community. The Society sponsors monthly concerts featuring national and international touring artists, as well as local and regional performers. These concerts are usually held on the second Friday of each month at 8:00 pm in the auditorium of the First United Methodist Church, 303 N. Main St., in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Parking is available in the church lot behind the church on Fourth Ave. Admission to most concerts is $15 for members, $18 for non-members, $5 for students with ID, or $5 at the door for seniors (62+) and veterans. The Society also offers an annual membership which entitles the holder to reduced admission to all regular monthly concerts.
