The band’s history

The Moody Blues are an English rock band formed in 1964 in Birmingham, West Midlands. They first came to prominence playing rhythm and blues music, but their second album, Days of Future Passed, which was released in 1967, was a fusion of rock and classical music and established them as pioneers in the development of art rock and progressive rock. They are known for their live performances, which often include pyrotechnics.

The band has sold more than 70 million albums worldwide and has been awarded 18 platinum and gold discs. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

The Moody Blues formed in 1964 as part of the British rhythm and blues boom. The original lineup included keyboardist Mike Pinder, drummer Graeme Edge, guitarist Denny Laine (who left the band in 1966 to form Wings with Paul McCartney), flautist/saxophonist Ray Thomas and bassist Clint Warwick (who was replaced by John Lodge in 1966).

Pinder originally intended The Moody Blues to be a vehicle for his own solo career, but after recruiting Edge and Thomas, the band began to develop its own sound and identity. Their debut album, The Magnificent Moodies (1965), was a commercial success in the UK, reaching number 5 on the charts. It featured a cover version of Bessie Smith’s “Born Under a Bad Sign”, which became a minor hit single for the band.

The follow-up album, Go Now (1966), was even more successful, reaching number 1 on the UK charts. The lead single from the album, “Go Now”, was also a number 1 hit in several countries around the world. Laine left the band shortly after the release of Go Now to form Wings with Paul McCartney. He was replaced by Justin Hayward (guitar) and John Lodge (bass).

With Hayward and Lodge now on board, The Moody Blues began to move away from R&B and into more experimental territory with their next two albums, Days of Future Passed (1967) and In Search of the Lost Chord (1968). Both albums were major critical and commercial successes, cementing The Moody Blues’ reputation as one of the leading bands of the British progressive rock movement.
