Early life and family
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Morris is the only child of country music artist Gary Morris and his wife, Linda (née Goodman). Gary Morris achieved considerable success in the early 1980s. Linda Goodman was a co-writer of the 1983 hit “-I’m” for Crystal Gayle. Growing up in Boulder, Colorado, Brian attended Fairview High School, where he was on the football and wrestling teams. He later graduated from the University of Colorado with a B.A. in English.
During his time at the University of Colorado, Morris was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. After graduation, he worked for various newspapers before moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 1989 to pursue a career in country music songwriting and singing.
Career
Morris’s career in country music began in the 1960s, when he was a member of the folk music group The Highwaymen. In 1962, they had a hit with their single “Michael (Row the Boat Ashore),” which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. After the success of “Michael,” Morris left The Highwaymen to pursue a solo career.
In 1963, Morris released his debut album, Toussaint L’Ouverture, which included the single “Walk Right In.” The album was not a success, and Morris did not release another album until 1966’s Gulf Coast Blue. That album also failed to find an audience, and Morris did not release another record until 1969’s The Lonely One.
The Lonely One was a minor hit, reaching number 43 on the country chart. It was followed by two more unsuccessful albums, 1971’s A Taste of Love and 1972’s Too Much Water in the Well. In 1973, Morris finally found success with his album Intimate Strangers. The album spawned the hit single “My Elusive Dreams,” which reached number four on the country chart.
Intimate Strangers was followed by 1974’s Love Is Only Love and 1975’s Ain’t Nothin’ You Can Do. Both albums were successful, reaching the top ten on the country chart. In 1976, Morris had his biggest hit with the single “Tonight I’m Gonna Let Go.” The song reached number one on the country chart and became a crossover hit, reaching number 24 on the pop chart.
The success of “Tonight I’m Gonna Let Go” led to increased sales of Morris’s albums, and in 1977 he released three albums that all reached the top ten on the country chart: Why Lady Why, Days Gone By, and Tender Hearted Man. However, none of those albums spawned any major hits, and Morris’ popularity began to decline in the late 1970s.
In 1981, he had his last top ten hit with “I’ll Never Stop Loving You,” but he continued to release albums throughout the 1980s without much commercial success. In 1988, he retired from recording and touring due to health problems. He died in 1996 at the age of 60.
