Christmas Activities

Mistletoe
One of the most iconic Christmastime activities, kissing under the mistletoe, has a long and storied history. The tradition is thought to have originated in ancient Greece, where it was believed that mistletoe had magical powers. Mistletoe was also regarded as a symbol of fertility and was often used in wedding ceremonies.

In Scandinavia, the plant was considered a sign of good luck, and it was customary to decorate doorways and windows with it during the winter months. In England, mistletoe was hung in homes as a protection against evil spirits.

The custom of kissing under the mistletoe is thought to have originated in England in the 16th century. At that time, it was customary for men to exchange a kiss with any woman they happened to be standing under when they crossed paths.

Christmas Trees
The Christmas tree is an evergreen tree that is decorated with lights and ornaments during the Christmas season. Christmas trees can be real or artificial, and they are often given as gifts.

It is not clear when or where the first Christmas tree was decorated, but many historians believe that it was in Germany sometime in the 16th century. The tradition of decorating trees spread to other parts of Europe, and from there to America. Today, Christmas trees are popular all over the world.

Christmas Carols
A Christmas carol is a song or piece of music that is usually sung during the Christmas season. Christmas carols typically feature lyrics about Jesus, Mary, and other aspects of Christianity, and they are often set to traditional melodies.

“Jingle Bells” and “Silent Night” are two of the most popular Christmas carols worldwide. “Jingle Bells” was written by American composer James Pierpont in 1857, while “Silent Night” was penned by Austrian composer Franz Xaver Gruber in 1818.
