History of the Newport Folk Music Festival
The Newport Folk Music Festival is an American annual folk music festival that takes place in Newport, Rhode Island. The festival was founded in 1959 by George Wein, who also founded the nearby Newport Jazz Festival. Since its inception, the festival has been held every year except for four: in 1963, when civil unrest caused cancellation; in 1971, when financial problems forced a postponement until 1972; in 1979, when bad weather prevented performers and spectators from reaching the festival site; and in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
The first Newport Folk Festival was held on July 1, 1959. Headliners included Pete Seeger, The Weavers, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Bob Gibson, and Odetta. The Weavers withdrew from performing after being blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee;Joan Baez was added to the lineup to replace them. That first year’s event was so successful that Wein decided to repeat it annually.
Over the years, the Newport Folk Music Festival has featured some of the most important musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries. Joan Baez made her first appearance at Newport in 1960 and returned many times over the years; other notable performers have included Bob Dylan (whose “going electric” at Newportin 1965 caused a stir), Johnny Cash, Wilson Pickett, Richie Havens (whose 1969 opening set at Newport is considered one of the greatest ever), Simon and Garfunkel (reuniting for the first time since their 1970 breakup to perform at Newport in 1981), James Taylor, Kris Kristofferson, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Ray Charles , Willie Nelson , John Prine , Crosby Stills & Nash , Van Morrison and hundreds more.
The festival continues to be held every year and features a mix of both established artists and up-and-coming performers.
