Introduction

Old Soul music is a genre that encompasses a wide range of sounds and styles, from the smooth crooners of the 1940s to the gritty blues singers of the 1960s. It is sometimes called classic soul to distinguish it from contemporary R&B, which is its primary musical relative. Old soul artists feature prominently on both mainstream radio stations and niche online streaming services, and the genre continues to enjoy a devoted following among music lovers of all ages.

While the term “old soul” has no definitive meaning, it is generally used to describe artists who evoke a sense of nostalgia or who have a classic sound that stands the test of time. Many old soul artists began their careers in the 1950s and 1960s, but the genre has also seen a resurgence in recent years with contemporary performers like Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Sam Smith. These artists have brought new life to old soul music with their unique interpretations of classic sounds.

This Old Soul music mix is the perfect way to relax and unwind. It features some of the best old soul songs that will transport you back in time. If you’re looking for a way to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then this mix is for you.

Ray Charles

Ray Charles was an American singer, songwriter, musician and composer. Among friends and fellow musicians he preferred being called “Brother Ray.” He was often referred to as “The Genius.” Charles started losing his sight at the age of five. By seven he was blind. Despite his blindness, he learned to play piano, saxophone, clarinet, and trumpet. He became one of the most influential rhythm & blues artists of the 1950s with songs such as “I Got a Woman,” “Hit the Road Jack,” and “Unchain My Heart.” But it was his version of country music’s “I Can’t Stop Loving You” that made him a household name.

Otis Redding

Otis Redding is widely considered one of the greatest soul singers of all time. He was a major force in bringing soul music to the mainstream. His impassioned singing style and classic songs like “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” and “Respect” made him one of the most influential musicians of his generation.

Redding was born in 1941 in Dawson, Georgia. He began his musical career singing gospel music in churches around his hometown. In the early 1960s, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he began working with the famed Memphis-based record producer Jim Stewart. It was during this time that Redding began to develop his signature sound.

In 1966, Redding released his debut album, Pain in My Heart. The album was a hit, reaching the Top Ten on the R&B charts. From there, Redding’s career took off. He released a string of successful albums and singles over the next few years, including “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” which became one of the most iconic songs of the 1960s.

Sadly, Redding’s career was cut short when he died in a plane crash in 1967 at the age of 26. But even in death, Redding left an indelible mark on popular music. His music continues to resonate with fans all over the world and has been widely covered by other artists. He remains one of the most influential soul singers of all time.

Sam Cooke

Sam Cooke is often cited as one of the most influential musical figures of the 20th century. His unique blend of gospel, soul, and pop made him a crossover sensation in the early 1960s, and his work continues to resonate with audiences today.

Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1931, Cooke began his musical career as a gospel singer. He first gained national attention as a member of the legendary Gospel group The Soul Stirrers, with whom he recorded such classics as “Touch the Hem of His Garment” and “Jesus Gave Me Water.” In 1957, Cooke embarked on a solo career with the release of his debut album, Songs by Sam Cooke.

It was with his second album, however, that Cooke truly found his voice. Entitled My Kind of Blues, the record featured a mixture of blues, gospel, and pop standards that showcased Cooke’s extraordinary vocal abilities. The album was a hit with both critics and fans, and cemented Cooke’s status as a major force in popular music.

Cooke would go on to release a string of successful singles including “You Send Me,” “Only Sixteen,” and “Cupid,” all of which helped to further broaden his appeal. Tragically, Cooke’s life came to an abrupt end in 1964 when he was murdered at the age of 33. Nonetheless, his music continues to live on and inspire new generations of fans.

Sadly, Winehouse passed away in 2012 at the age of 27. However, her music continues to live on and inspire new generations of artists.
