History

WQXR (105.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to New York City and owned by Univision Radio. The station airs a classical music format and is the flagship station of Classical WQXR, which is operated by New York Public Radio.

WQXR was founded in 1936 by John Vassos as an independent station and became known as “The Voice of Music” when it was acquired by CBS two years later. The station aired a mix of light classical music and popular music until 1955, when it switched to an all-classical music format. In 1996, WQXR was acquired by The New York Times Company, which then sold the station to WNYC in 2009. History

The Harvard Radio Broadcasting Company – WHRB – is a student-run, non-commercial, FM radio station broadcasting at 95.3 MHz in the Greater Boston area, and online at whrb.org.

WHRB was founded in 1940 by a group of Harvard undergraduates interested in creating an alternative to commercial radio. The earliest broadcasts were classical music programs, initially only an hour or two per week. In the 1950s, WHRB began broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and gradually expanded its programming to include jazz, blues, rock n’ roll, and other genres.

Today, WHRB programming includes a wide range of music genres, as well as news and sports. The station is entirely volunteer-run and is staffed by Harvard students and alumni.
